It’s Kind of a Funny Story is a film that I wanted to see in theaters but just didn’t get the chance — now I know I didn’t miss much. The film was not bad by any means, but it was just sort of ‘blah’ in a lot of ways. There was certainly one point of the film, where everyone busts out in musical fashion that I thought was unfounded and cheesy. I think the film works best as a character study for a kid who is struggling with identity and the world around him, and just doesn’t know what to do. Although the film would have you believe it’s about depression, I think it was more about finding your place and realizing your path and dreams using mental illness as a backdrop to explore that – which was an interesting aspect. I would put this in the “black comedy” section, although I don’t think it was particularly successful as a black comedy – it didn’t have enough drone in it. Overall, it was an alright film, worth seeing, but nothing special and wouldn’t watch it again.
