Review

I will say right off, I had high hopes for Monsters, and when I go into a film with high expectations, sometimes they just don’t jump that hurdle. Monsters is one of those films. The film was decent, but in no way garnered any of the claims by reviewers. With that said, there were some things that made THIS monster movie unique and worth watching. The greatest thing about the film was, purely by chance, the monsters! They were like giant walking squid, which I thought was hilarious, but also quite awesome. Normally, the dynamic in a movie like this includes either a persons journey through the post-apocalyptic scenario (i.e. I Am Legend) or an entire group of people (i.e. Cloverfield). I think the dynamic between the characters and the journey created an interesting possibility, that flopped. The characters were the lamest part of the film, and I felt the journey should have been tougher and longer (although what the ending implies, would fall inline with some of why it wasn’t). A lot of monster movies take place during “the incident” or directly after, but what I liked about “Monsters” is that it took place during the aftermath. There were several unnecessary scenes that added nothing to the story — those should have been replaced by riveting scenes from the outer-world beings. The film was not bad, and if you like this type of movie, I would say it reached into some unfamiliar territory, which was refreshing.
