Get Low is one of those films that proves me wrong about “Oldey Timey Films”. Anyone who knows me knows that if a film takes place before the 70s, I have a hard time not judging it up front, but Get Low breaks those expectations. Yes, I still get annoyed with the environment, setting, and costuming, but all of that is overlooked for a great film like this. I love any film that has a message (although I’d argue most films have a message, but sometimes either the message sucks or is buried so far under the plot, it isn’t accessible) about life. Get Low says “don’t judge a book by it’s cover”. Often times when people hide themselves away, there is a reason. We’ve seen the “old man that lives up on the hill” prototype in a lot of horror films, as side-stories to a different plot, and just conceptually, but this is what Get Low focuses on, and it works very well. Felix is your typical creepy hermit that just wants to be left alone, and when the stories about him fill his piss-pot too full, he asks Mr. Bush to give him a funeral so people can tell his stories in a public venue. This soon turns into him wanting to tell his own story, and the film is about the preparation and unraveling of his past and eventual telling of “why he is the way he is”. The film has heart, character, and a great flow. Get Low is worth your time, and if you hate “period” films (although this isn’t completely characteristic of a period film), I can still suggest this film as a great film!
